Founded by settlers from Woburn and Concord in 1653, Chelmsford was officially incorporated in 1655 when it contained the present-day towns of Carlisle, Westford and parts of Lowell. The only town in the United States bearing its name, Chelmsford was named for Chelmsford, England. The Chelmsford militia played an important role in the American Revolution, and was most famous for its participation at the Battle of Lexington and Concord and the Battle of Bunker Hill. At the turn of the 20th Century, Chelmsford began to make it’s mark in soft drink history as the birthplace of the Chelmsford Spring Company. The company became the Chelmsford Ginger Ale Company, which was acquired by Canada Dry in 1928. Chelmsford’s golden ginger ale brand continues to be manufactured by Polar Beverages.
